The Rock Valley College Archives are a college institutional archive, meaning our collection is focused on recording and sharing the history of Rock Valley College, but all sorts of archives exist and collect material based on their own special set of criteria. There are many archives with a very specific scope of collecting (e.g. The Archive for Research in Archetypical Symbolism) and some that are very broad (e.g. The National Archives). Some types of archives include:
- College and university archives
- Corporate archives
- Government archives
- Historical societies
- Museums
- Religious archives
- Special collections
