Library Instruction Program Outcomes

The library's instruction program engages students in the process of discovery, effective utilization, and ethical use of a wide variety of information sources in collections available through the Estelle M. Black Library at Rock Valley College. ACRL's Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education guides instructional activities.

Student outcomes

As a result of library instruction, students will

  • identify three major collections contained within the Estelle M. Black physical library

  • differentiate library service points and library staff functions

  • discover and retrieve print and electronic sources in support of a research topic; those sources will include books, eBooks, articles from magazines, newspapers and journals

  • describe the difference between a popular source and a scholarly source of information

  • construct a basic search that consists of keywords and subject terms and an advanced search that connects search terms with Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT)

  • locate discipline or career-focused sources in the print collection, in eJournals and in databases

Faculty and Librarian Partnership for Student Success

Faculty and Librarians facilitate an effective research process by

  • Providing guidance on Topic Selection and Formulation of Research Questions

  • Guide students in selection of appropriate tools for specific assignments

  • Encourage students to verify validity of information

  • Informally assess students by asking them to reflect on the research process following library instruction
